What Is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine. It can be a single curvature or an S-curve with two curvatures. Sometimes scoliosis is idiopathic, meaning people develop it without a clear reason. You may see a child get diagnosed, and not everyone knows why.
In some cases, it may be related to poor posture, incorrect backpack use, or prolonged sitting in a certain way over many years. This can cause curvatures in the spine.
True scoliosis is a curvature of the spine that exceeds normal limits and does not straighten without intervention.
Symptoms of Scoliosis
People with scoliosis often have body stiffness, especially in the areas of curvature. They may have a limited range of motion in certain directions.
For example, if the spine curves one way, they may not be able to turn in that direction. This can lead to stiffness, aching, pain, and reduced mobility.
How Scoliosis Is Diagnosed
Sometimes there may be a fused vertebra or a hemivertebra, in which part of the vertebra is deformed. Hence, with scoliosis, we typically take X-rays to ensure there is no vertebral fusion or any abnormal vertebrae.
X-rays are used to understand what type of scoliosis we are working with and to measure the curve before starting treatment.
Treatment Plan for Scoliosis
Treatment focuses on opening up the tight side of the curve. If it is an S curve, we work into the concave side and loosen the musculature.
We then work on strengthening and improving the range of motion that is lacking. This includes treating the area, adjusting the spine to increase flexibility, and teaching patients how to move their bodies into positions that help improve the curve.
A lot of times, we can have scoliosis, but depending on how long you have had it and how big it is, we customize a treatment plan. We do not intend to get them fully straight, because that might be impossible. Our goal is to get them more comfortable, with a greater range of motion and less curvature.
Scoliosis Patient Case Study
We had a patient who is a musician. She played an instrument that kept her in one position for prolonged periods. Over the years, she developed a curve in her back, which was diagnosed as scoliosis. She came in with extreme pain. It was hard for her to play the instrument. She had stiffness and could not stand for long periods.
We started treating her by loosening the musculature around her spine that was holding her in one position. We began specific chiropractic adjustments and continued treatment over time. Within two or three visits, she showed significant progress, about 50 percent improvement in the symptoms she had for years.
We continued treatment over several months, a few times each month, and she kept improving. She reported that her quality of life was much better. Her pain became more manageable, and she was able to play music again and sit for longer periods without discomfort.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can scoliosis be corrected without surgery?
Many mild to moderate cases can be managed conservatively. Care focuses on spinal balance, comfort, and function rather than forceful correction.
Does chiropractic care stop scoliosis progression?
Chiropractic care helps support spinal movement and reduce stress. Progression depends on age, curve type, and growth factors.
Do I need X-rays before starting treatment?
X-rays may be recommended to understand spinal structure and curvature. Not every patient needs imaging right away.
When should you seek treatment for scoliosis?
Evaluation is recommended if any changes in posture, discomfort, or curvature are noticed at any age.
How long does scoliosis treatment take?
Treatment length varies based on age, curve severity, and individual goals.
Is chiropractic treatment for scoliosis painful?
Care is designed to be gentle and comfortable, especially for children and sensitive patients.
